
Getting the Heat Right for Silk-Screened Glass
If you’ve ever worked with integrated glass finishing, you know it feels like a constant tug-of-war. You’re trying to cure the silk-screen ink and temper the glass at the same time, but they don’t always want to play nice. Push the heat too hard and too fast? Your ink bleeds or burns, and those crisp patterns turn into a blurry mess. But if you play it too safe, the glass never hits that softening point it needs for structural strength. The trick to stopping that fight is using short-wave infrared (IR) lamps. They give you the kind of precision you just can’t get with standard heating. The secret is in the wavelength. We set these lamps for a very specific energy density. Because it’s short-wave IR, the heat doesn’t just sit on the surface; it punches right through the glass to hit the ink and the substrate directly. You can tweak the wattage and voltage to control how fast things ramp up. If you’re dealing with thick glass, you’ll need those high-wattage quartz tubes to do the heavy lifting. Just keep an eye on your conveyor speed. If the belt crawls too slowly, you’ll over-cure the ink before you even know it. A word of warning on the hardware. We use high-purity quartz envelopes because they let the most IR light through. They’re tough enough for the heat of the oven, but they’re incredibly brittle. And here is a pro tip:**Never touch these tubes with your bare hands.**The oils from your skin create tiny hotspots. It sounds minor, but that’s exactly how you get a tube to pop prematurely. To make life easier during maintenance, we usually stick with R7s or Sk15 connectors. They just drop right in, so you aren’t wasting half your shift fighting with wiring. Finding the sweet spot. Combining the curing and tempering stages is great for saving floor space and cutting down on energy waste. But it puts a lot of pressure on your PID controllers. You have to watch the surface temperature in real-time. Seriously. A jump of just 20°C can be the difference between a perfect, sharp line and a smeared edge. Plus, don’t forget about the air around the machine. Those IR banks put out a massive amount of ambient heat. If your cooling system isn’t up to the task, you might find your oven shell starting to warp. Not a great look.
