
Why You Can’t Skimp on Explosion-Proof Quartz for Wet Areas
When you’re picking out infrared heaters for a bathroom or a garden, most people just look for an IP65 rating. They figure, “Great, it’s waterproof, I’m good to go.” But here’s the thing: an IP rating keeps the water out. It doesn’t stop a lamp from shattering if a single drop of cold water hits a surface that’s glowing at 600°C. That’s a recipe for a bad day. That’s exactly why we use explosion-proof quartz.
The “Thermal Shock” Problem
Think about what happens when you throw cold water on a hot pan. The glass does something similar, but way more violent. Standard quartz tubes expand and contract too much. In a shower or outdoors, those sudden temperature swings make the glass snap. It’s fast. It’s loud. And it’s dangerous. We use a specialized quartz that can actually take that beating. It handles the thermal shock without breaking, keeping the heating element safe and sound even when the environment is chaotic.
Getting the Heat Right
These lamps use short-wave infrared. Basically, the tungsten filament sits inside high-purity quartz, sending heat straight to your skin without having to warm up all the air in the room first. It feels more natural. We obsess over the wall thickness and the purity of the silica. Why? Because if the quartz isn’t pure, the tube can warp when you crank up the wattage. One quick tip: if you’re running these at full blast, make sure your housing can handle the “heat soak.” You don’t want your plastic mounts melting into a puddle.
Setting It Up Safely
These are designed to slide right into IP65 housings. Just make sure your seal is tight. You really don’t want steam drifting over to the electrical terminals. And look, even though the glass is tough and won’t burst, you still need a proper GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) in your wiring. Water and high-voltage electricity are a terrifying mix. No matter how strong the glass is, your circuit protection is the real safety net here. Don’t skip it.
