
Getting Carbon Fiber Curing Right with IR Heating
If you’ve ever worked with high-end carbon fiber, you know the struggle. You need that thermal ramp-up to be spot on. Too cold, and the resin doesn’t set. Too hot, and you’ve just ruined an expensive piece of material. For the MS JP7 setup, we use custom shortwave IR lamps. They’re designed to hit that sweet spot where the resin activates, but the fiber matrix stays safe.
Why IR beats the oven
Here’s the thing: conventional convection ovens take forever. We use high power density lamps because shortwave energy actually penetrates the composite layers. It’s fast. Really fast. We’re talking about shrinking cycle times from hours down to just a few minutes. But there’s a catch. You have to keep a very close eye on the surface temperature. If you zone out, you’ll scorch the resin.
The nitty-gritty of the build
We make these tubes out of high-purity quartz. Why? Because the internal heat is intense, and anything less would just melt or crack. We also position the electrodes carefully so the heat hits the fabric evenly from end to end. If you’re adding these to an existing MS JP7 frame, don’t sweat the install. The connectors are basically plug-and-play, so you aren’t staring at a dead machine for half a day. We usually go with a halogen fill. It helps the lamps last longer and keeps the wattage steady. One heads-up, though: all that intensity creates a lot of “heat soak” in the machine chassis. Make sure your cooling fans are actually up to the task, or you’ll end up frying your control boards.
Making the MS JP7 actually work
The biggest headache in lightweight fabric processing is “cold spots.” Nothing kills a project faster than inconsistent curing. Since IR energy is targeted, the cure is uniform across the whole width of the material. We obsess over the wattage-per-centimeter ratio to make sure the resin flows and sets exactly where it should. It takes the guesswork out of the process. You can actually trust that the structural integrity of the carbon fiber is exactly where it needs to be.
